Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Academy located?
DAA is located on approximately 1000 acres of rolling hills and prairie 14 miles northwest of Bismarck, North Dakota, on the Missouri River. It is one of the northernmost academies in the continental United States and has the distinction of being on the Lewis and Clark Trail. To visit DAA, drive north from Bismarck on Highway 83 to Highway 1804 and turn left. Continue for 11 miles on Highway 1804. DAA is on the right side of the highway just north of mile marker 94. Turn right onto Plainview Avenue and proceed up the hill. The administrative offices are located on the main floor through the center doors.
What grades are included at DAA?
DAA offers grades 9 through 12. Juniors and seniors can also take several dual credit classes, picking up some college credit while still in high school.
What organizations accredit DAA?
DAA is accredited with the Accrediting Association of Seventh-day Adventist Schools, Colleges, and Universities (AAA). DAA is one of the seven affiliated secondary schools operating in the Mid-America Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (MAUC). The school is also accredited by the National Council for Private School Accreditation, (NCPSA) and is approved by the state of North Dakota as a secondary school.
What time of year can a student enroll?
Ideally, students new to DAA will apply to and be accepted prior to the end of June. Returning students are expected to register before regular classes begin in August. Students planning to attend for the second semester must apply and be accepted prior to December 1.
Students who register after the start of either semester may be admitted, however, the Academic Standards Committee will evaluate the course load they may be carry, pending their incoming transcript and performance referencing. Students who register late and receive full credit for the grading period are expected to pay full tuition.

Are uniforms required for students?
DAA does not have a uniform dress code requirement. Rather, DAA’s dress policy is based on the principles of modesty, simplicity, cleanliness, health, safety, and respect for cultural norms. We simply ask that clothes be modest, clean, and in good repair. Click here (link to open the handbook, general dress code section, in a separate window) to see the general dress guidelines as written in the school handbook.
Are there specific religious requirements at DAA?
DAA accepts students of any religious denomination or those without a stated affiliation. Students are expected to enroll in one Bible class per year at DAA. Courses include Old Testament studies, New Testament studies, Daniel and Revelation, Marriage and Family, the Writings of Paul, World Religions (world views of religion) and Personal Evangelism. A chapel/assembly period is built into the weekly schedule; however, special chapel/assembly periods will be announced if necessary. These may or may not be religious in nature. In addition, there are meetings scheduled on the weekends that include Friday evening vespers, Sabbath School, church and an evening program Saturdays. Dorm students are expected to attend these various appointments. Village students are also welcome and encouraged to participate.
Are all students required to live on campus?
Most students live on campus in the dorms, however, students may elect to live in town or in the surrounding countryside, provided that they are residing with their own parents or other immediate family members (grandparents, uncles or aunts, older sibling). Some students live in the dorms but go home on weekends. Full regular dorm rules and fees apply.
Is there planning help for students as they look to future education?
We will work closely with you on every aspect of what and how you need to prepare. Starting as early as the first year of high school, students are encouraged to find their passions, explore their interests, and evaluate potential careers. During the sophomore year, they look at specific programs that would be needed to get into their fields of interest. At the beginning of the junior year, they attend college fairs and begin to look at applications to specific schools and by the end of that year, they are writing the ACT and SAT and they are filling out scholarship forms and applications to schools of their choice. During the senior year, students may attend college days at their choice of universities, transcripts are sent and final applications are completed. Most students will have their university acceptance and scholarships arranged before they graduate. For more details, click here (connects to https://www.mydaa.org/current-students/college-and-career-help )
We have a strong vocational program and students who plan to go on in those fields are equally assisted in exploring further vocational training.
